SUSTAINABILITY

expertise comes with experience

There are many professionals who consider themselves environmental sustainability experts. Rightfully, some are. However, LEED or WELL certifications are good, but they only scratch the surface. Whether clients are driven by economics or environmentalism, I provide them with expert services backed by a masters diploma and two decades of professional experience in two countries: England and the United States.

Draft concept for plastic waste reduction in cafeterias.
2019 - 2022

Atrium Health began working towards zero plastics pre-pandemic. One of the biggest culprits were the takeout containers in the cafeterias servicing staff and visitors. I proposed displaying and selling reusable food and drink containers in the cafeterias that were already being sold on the staff intranet. Discounts for using reusable containers and dish cleaning stations would encourage reuse; see the image [left] for more details. The plan was to be implemented in 2021, but unfortunately the pandemic force us to pause the initiative.

Sustainability Post Occupancy Evaluation
2011
My sole proprietorship, Second Eden Studio, was hired by Skills USA to conduct a POE (post occupancy evaluation) for their corporate location in Leesburg, Virginia. I spent two days touring, documenting, and gathering data for the POE report. The report covered everything from carbon to energy, water to transport,  losses to gains, and more. The POE included suggestions to improve sustainability in three categories based on cost: (1) none, (2) moderate, and (3) investment. The report was well received by the client, and they were able to efficiently implement the suggestions to improve overall sustainability.

I was hired by Tetlow King to begin and lead a sustainability department. Although the credit crunch prevented staff growth, the sustainability services I was able to provide became a consistent and necessary earner.

Feasibility study
2003
I was asked to conduct a feasibility study based on an early version of BREEAM's Code for Sustainable Buildings. The client, Emmaus, is a British nonprofit providing living quarters and jobs for homeless people in their secondhand store. There are dozens of locations, but this particular new build was required by the city and Emmaus to be sustainable beyond the current government requirements. Maintaining biodiversity, minimizing carbon emissions, and a resilient envelope were the focus.
